Kessab Liberated

Gibrahayer e-magazine - Sunday 15 June 2014 - Nicosia - The Armenian-populated city of Kessab, on the border with Turkey was liberated by the Syrian Government Army after violent clashes with Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front who fled the town leaving behind dozens of dead. Kessab had been invaded by fighters who had made their way through the Turkish border in March 2014.

 Syrian military sources said that the Syrian army first took Samra and then advanced towards Kessab. It also said that they were now dismantling mines and booby traps and were not allowing citizens of the town to return yet, as it considered it to be still unsafe for civilians.

Local TV stations reported that the army had raised the Syrian flag on top of Kessab's Municipality building and that the army units were now patrolling the border with Turkey and were busy with mop-up operations to clear the area from "foreign backed terrorists".

It was also learnt through Britain-based Syrian Observatory of Human Rights that in their operations to liberate Kessab, the Syrian army troops were backed by fighters of the Lebanese Shiite military group Hezbollah.
