How to live as an
immigrant, a Diasporan, a teenager, and a gang member? What is the role of
communities in the prevention of teenage violence? How to help teens make life
decisions when the pull is so strong in so many directions?
Salpi Ghazarian, Director, USC Institute of Armenian Studies; Christopher Chambers
(Director/Producer, ARAM, ARAM), and Ara Arzumanian (Program Director, USC
College Advising Corps) will discuss the roots of the problem and the solutions that are available.
Arzumanian has
dedicated his professional career to tackling the problem of education in
immigrant communities and has contributed to gang reduction in critical
communities. He has mentored hundreds of teens through AGBU’s Generation Next
Mentorship Program and Big Brothers Big Sisters in Greater Los Angeles Area. He
sees education as the driver towards less crime and healthier immigrant
communities.
The film ARAM, ARAM tells the story of a 12-year
old boy of Armenian descent who is uprooted from his home in Bourj Hamoud,
Lebanon and forced to immigrate to Los Angeles to live with his grandfather
after the death of his parents in a car accident. His unexpected move to a
foreign country and neighborhood, his lack of familiarity with the places, and lack
of English knowledge push him towards a violent path. His circumstances and the
pull from the familiar albeit violent world make gangs an obvious choice for
him.
