On Wednesday, January 6, more than 700 worshipers visited
New York’s St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral for the observance of the Feast of the
Nativity and Theophany of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Additionally, for the first
time, the Diocese did a livestream broadcast of the service, with a narration,
which was watched by some 2,000 viewers.Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Diocesan Primate, celebrated
the Divine Liturgy, and delivered a sermon in which he reflected on the
conclusion of the centennial year of the Armenian Genocide.

He spoke about the
legacy left by the generation of Armenians who experienced the darkness of
1915—“a legacy that answered death with life. That responded to destruction
with creativity. It is a legacy that endured suffering, but never brought
suffering upon anyone else. It is a gift to carry with us throughout our days,
to guide and complete the journey through life.”
Archbishop Yeghishe Gizirian; Rev. Fr. Mardiros Chevian,
dean of St. Nersess Armenian Seminary; and Rev. Fr. Bedros Kadehjian also
participated in the service. George Marootian served as godfather for the
churorhnek, or Blessing of Water ceremony, which commemorates the baptism of
Jesus by the hand of John the Baptist.
After the service on January 6, a reception was held in
Haik and Alice Kavookjian Auditorium, where a traditional home-blessing
ceremony was led by Archbishop Barsamian. The Astghikner Ensemble gave a
colorful performance.

An Armenian Christmas Eve service was held on the evening
of January 5. The celebrant was the Very Rev. Fr. Simeon Odabashian, Diocesan
Vicar.
