Distribution and Publication of Gulbenkian Maternity Hospital

Please note that only preliminary steps have been undertaken so far towards the reopening of the Verjine Gulbenkian Maternity Hospital in Aleppo.  Plans are underway, but the reopening is not imminent. Also, attached is an archival photo of the Gulbenkian Maternity Hospital, in case you decide to publish that as well.

News Release

NEW YORK – With over 80 years of service dedicated to the Armenian nation, the Verjine Gulbenkian Maternity Hospital has been a blessing to Syrian Armenians, and, in particular, to Aleppo Armenians. This was especially true for the scattered remnants of the Armenian deportees, who, after experiencing the bitter fate of the Genocide, were able to form new families on the hospitable soil of the Syrian homeland.

The maternity hospital became a place for childbearing which served all without discrimination—without attention to religious denomination or politics. Multiple generations were born in this maternity hospital and today they recall the great charitable work conducted there with reverence.

Unfortunately, due to the consequences of the Syrian conflict, the Verjine Gulbenkian Maternity Hospital, along with other Armenian institutions, was forced temporarily to close its doors. The Gullabi Gulbenkian Foundation’s maternity hospital is in a comparatively more peaceful geographical area in a quarter with a large Armenian population. On the other hand, the Armenian home for the aged was bombarded and experienced damage. Consequently, over the past few years the maternity hospital has been providing a temporary safe shelter to the displaced elderly residents.

On December 25, 2015, the board of directors of the Gullabi Gulbenkian Foundation announced to all Aleppo Armenians that the Verjine Gulbenkian Maternity Hospital, a charitable institution, will once again return to its original mission, by reestablishing the first floor of its building as a hospital ward. Also, through the decision of the board of directors of the Gullabi Gulbenkian Foundation, while giving temporary shelter in its complex, it will continue to keep its doors open to the elderly until the resolution of this tragic conflict allows their return to the Armenian home for the aged.

ՆԻՒ ԵՈՐՔ – Աւելի քան 80 տարիներու ազգանուէր ծառայութեամբ, Վերժին Կիւլպէնկեան Մայրանոցը հալեպահայութեան մասնաւորապէս ու սուրիահայութեան ընդհանրապէս եղաւ բարիք մը մանաւա՛նդ գաղթական հայութեան բեկորներուն համար, որոնք Ցեղասպանութեան դառն ճակատագիրը ճաշակելով կազմեցին իրենց բոյնը ասպնջական սուրիական հայրենիքէն ներս:

Մայրանոցը ծննդեան տուն եղաւ ու հասաւ բոլորի՛ն անխտիր, առանց յարանուանական, հատուածական ու քաղաքական գոյն տալու այս ազգօգուտ հիմնարկին:  Մայրանոցին մէջ ծնան յաջորդական սերունդներ եւ այսօր անոնք ակնածանքով կը յիշեն անոր կատարած բարեսիրական մեծ գործը:

Դժբախտաբար, սուրիական պատերազմին հետեւանքով, Վերժին Կիւլպէնկեան Մայրանոցն ալ ի շարս ազգային այլ հաստատութիւններուն ստիպուած եղաւ ժամանակաւորապէս փակել իր դռները:  Վերջին քանի մը տարիներուն Կիւլլապի Կիւլպէնկեան Հաստատութեան մայրանոցը, իր աշխարհագրական դիրքով աւելի հանդարտ վայր մը ըլլալով հայաշատ թաղամասին մէջ, ժամանակաւորապէս դարձաւ ապահով երդիք մը հայ ծերանոցի տարեցներուն համար, քանի որ պատերազմի պատճառով ծերանոցի շէնքը ռմբակոծուած եւ վնասուած էր:

Կիւլլապի Կիւլպէնկեան Հաստատութեան տնօրէն խորհուրդը Դեկտեմբերի 25, 2015-ին, հայտարարած է համայն հալեպահայութեան որ Վերժին Կիւլպէնկեան Մայրանոցը,  բարեսիրական հիմնարկ մը, դարձեալ կը վերադառնայ իր աւանդական առաքելութեան, վերահաստատելով շէնքին առաջին յարկը իբրեւ հիւանդանոց:  Նաեւ, Կիւլլապի Կիւլպէնկեան Հաստատութեան տնօրէն խորհուրդի որոշումով, ժամանակաւորապէս իր համալիրին մէջ ապաստան տալով հանդերձ պիտի շարունակէ իր դռները բաց պահել մեր տարեցներուն առջեւ, մինչեւ բարի աւարտը տխուր պատերազմին եւ անոնց վերադարձը դէպի հայ ծերանոցի շէնքը:

Հալեպի մեջ, հաստատութեան եւ համալիրին լիազօր ներկայացուցիչ Պրն. Օհաննէս Օհաննէսեան շուտով պիտի ձեռնարկէ վերաբացումին նախնական աշխատանքներուն, որպէսզի մայրանոցը վերագտնէ իր անցեալի հմայքը եւ վերընդունի մայրերը իր հիւանդանոցէն ներս:

Կիւլպէնկեան Մայրանոցի վերաբացումը յոյս, անվտանգութիւն, կայունութիւն եւ աշխատավայր կը հայթայթէ Հալեպի բնակիչներուն:

Շուտով հալեպահայութեան ուշադրութեան պիտի յանձնուի նոր զարգացումները Վերժին Կիւլպէնկեան Մայրանոցին հետ կապուած:  Մինչ այդ, Կիւլլապի Կիւլպէնկեան Հաստատութիւնը Շնորհաւոր Նոր Տարի եւ մնայուն խաղաղութիւն կը մաղթէ Սուրիական Հանրապետութեան եւ հալեպահայութեան:
